I recently read my very first MLP FIM fic, and this is what happened afterwards.

(The fic's GOOD by the way, you's better read it! [link] )

The character is Nyx, main character of this fic. And yes, this is still work in progress, I've still got her mane and tale to work with, and I think I just might dabble with water - these are water soluble colors.

You chose Past Sins ([link]) as your first dip into the FIM fanfiction pool? :O_o: You've got some balls, eh. That's like forgoing the wading pool and going straight for the high-dive. There's not a lot out there that compares with Past Sins in terms of quality storytelling. Honestly, I've read New York Times best-seller books that were crap compared to Past Sins (the current one notwithstanding).

About your artwork, it looks amazing so far. I see a couple big issues, though. First, Nyx is black. Like, jet-black, and with a deep purple mane. She's literally the Nightmare incarnate. Also, she's an alicorn. Where are her wings?

Well, to be honest I never thought I'd read any FIM fanfiction. It just so happened that I found a couple of drawings of Nyx, and became curious as to who she was, and read the story. And fell in love with it.

And about the issues... yes, I know she is black. That is hard to express without losing lots of details, as I'm still just experimenting with colors. And I realized the wing issue too. I'll try to fix it as well as I can, but honestly? I just forgot to draw them, I was so wrapped up in all other things. I've never enjoyed drawing pegasi anyway.

But hey, thanks for commenting! I love constructive criticism, and don't get enough of it!

For "just experimenting with colours," you're doing exceedingly well. I'm eager to see how this turns out.

As for the fanfiction, you're missing out if you stop with just Past Sins. Yes, Past Sins is a VERY high-quality example of the genre, but there are other exceptionally good, novel-length (and even a few incredible epic-length) fanfics out there. I'm an extremely picky reader, so if you want some reading suggestions, I can help you filter out the trash, so-to-speak.

Heh, thanks. I did use a few photos of sunsets and sunrises as reference to the coloring, so I could get it right. I also do much shading with graphic pencils, so basic shading is something I'm comfortable with. But I've still got tons to learn about colors and mixing them, and also creating different moods by colors. I also don't usually do any backgrounds, which makes this particular pic sort of rare too.

And I would just love that! I gotta admit, I've been slightly reluctant to wade in to the fanfic area. Unlike with pictures, you can't tell by one glance the generic idea. And I'm a little spooked by some of the excessive, gruesome over-sexualized and overly violent things I've seen.

Ugh. Don't get me started on the "clop" filth out there. I have read only one FIMfic (ONE, singular) where a sexual scene was actually appropriate and necessary for character development.

I have a mixed opinion about violence in FIMfics. Instances are rare where it both fits in the ponies' universe and is necessary for plot advancement. But when it's done correctly, it's neither overly-violent nor gratuitous. Violence (or the threat thereof) can be a very effective literary tool for emotional ensnarement when done properly.

If you want some suggested reading material, feel free to drop me a note privately and let me know what types of stories you enjoy. I've read WAY too much FIM fanfiction. According to my Nook, I've read over 20 million pony words so far. :XD:

I did read some "ask molestia" stuff out of curiosity, as I had no idea what it was about. Didn't like it.
And yes, I agree that when well done, sexuality can serve a purpose, but when it's the idea itself, wel... not my thing. And the same goes to violence. For example, I think that Past Sins has potential for more violence than it utilizes without being overly so. IMO, ponies might have turned on Twilight because she sheltered Nyx, and because she went to her and prevented the use of Elements of Harmony.

And I'll be sure to drop a note off.

Well, keep in-mind, too, that ponies are a very skittish species. In both the real world and the fictional world of Equestria, ponies are naturally fearful of anything outside the norm (e.g., Zecora, the griffins, even the princesses themselves), and their "fight or flight" mechanism is heavily weighted toward flight.

That is true also. In that sense Twilight appears to be "out of norm" herself - eager to learn more. As well as Nyx. Also, it is possible that Poniville has more courageous ponies than elsewhere?
Yet in the end ponies seemed to shun Nyx only, not Twilight also. It could be due to her being so close to Celestia, but I suppose not everyone would know that?

All in all, Past Sins was very enjoyable and true to the personalities of the ponies.

Ooh, that's looking very nice already! I'm a big fan of colored pencils and other traditional media - looking forward to seeing the finished version of this piece.
